As we know by now, there are many types of radiation and we have interacted with it in one form or another every day of our lives. Mobile phones emit electromagnetic radiation. The antennas of mobile phone emit radio frequency. It is a form of non-ionizing radiation. Despite enormous research on the matter of health hazard posed by radiation from mobile phones, there is no conclusive proof that it is a health risk.
The energy of electromagnetic radiation is determined by the frequency it emits. Non-ionisation energy is low frequency while ionisation energy is high frequency. Exposure to ionisation energy such as x-rays is absolutely harmful for health. While exposure to non-ionisation energy does not warrantee health risks, it is advisable not to use it for a prolonged duration.
Effects of radiation from phones
- Heating – Studies have found this to be the most consistent observation. Exposure to electromagnetic radiation from phone heats the part of the body it is in contact with. Although it isn’t much of a health risk, it is advisable to use earphones or hands-free technology.
- Blood Pressure – Some studies have found an increase in blood pressure at the time of use of a mobile phone. However, it returns to normal once the user stops using it.
- Studies have found that electromagnetic radiation to the brain is reduced by almost 98% when it is kept away. Therefore, it is advisable to keep the phone away from the head while sleeping.
- The electromagnetic radiation from phones affects pacemakers. So for people with pacemakers, it is advised to use it on the other side of the device. This is because the antenna, which is the source of energy is not placed near to the pacemaker and hence the effects are less.
Although the health risks of radiation from mobile phones is considered very, very less and not harmful, some individuals may be more susceptible to radiation exposure than others.
